Chapter Fifteen

“So, dad gives Liam this chocolate bar in the car, on probably the hottest day of the year, and he’s just two years old, so he gets distracted and lets it melt all over his hands and somehow on his legs.” We were walking back to my house through the woods and I was regaling her with stories about growing up with my two brothers, the good and the bad. Being at the Falls and remembering the old rope swing had made me nostalgic. “When we got to the school to pick Rodney up from soccer practice, he got in the car and asked what was all over Liam. Me, being the smartass ten-year-old, I thought it would be funny to tell him it was poop that Liam had dug out of his diaper. I waited until he got good and grossed out, then I ran my finger through the chocolate and ate it.”

“That’s so mean,” Ava said, but there was a smile on her face and laughter in her eyes.

“You don’t know the other half of it. Rodney gagged until he actually got sick all over the floor of the car, even when I tried to get him to stop by telling him the truth.”

“Oh my god,” laughter bubbled up her throat. “Your mom must have been livid.”

“That’s an understatement. I thought I’d be grounded for the rest of my life for that one. And I was forced to clean the car out by myself. Did I mention it was the hottest day of the year?”

She wrinkled her nose, probably imagining the smell. I didn’t have to. It would stick with me for the rest of my life.

“You definitely didn’t think that one through.”

“What can I say? I was a funny kid. Liam thinks he’s the only brother with a sense of humor, but he’s wrong.”

Ava just chuckled and shook her head. “And here I always thought I was missing out on something because I didn’ have siblings. Turns out, I might have just lost the chance to be traumatized.”

“Oh, please,” I waved her off. “Rodney turned out fine.”

“I wonder what his point of view on the matter would be.”

I smiled as I imagined his tale-telling of the same story. I’d definitely be painted as a villain.

We were taking our time walking back, as I had my arm thrown over her shoulder and she had hers around my waist. We fit perfectly together like this, and it was clear to me that we were made for each other.

I had to tell Ava the truth about who I was and what she meant to me. I meant it when I told her she could trust me, but now I had to trust her not to freak out when I told her I was a shifter. I just hoped that she’d realize it didn’t really change anything. I was still the same person, and she was still my girl.

After our impromptu sex in the woods - easily the most erotic experience of my life - I felt closer to her than ever.
